Guest Post: Jodie Renner “20 Essential Elements of a Bestselling Thriller”

Karen Dionne : December 2, 2013 2:07 pm : blog

If you want your thriller or other suspense fiction to be a compelling page-turner that sells, make sure you’ve included most or all of these elements:

A protagonist that readers can identify with and root for. Make your hero charismatic, sympathetic, clever, resourceful, fit, and determined to fight injustice, despite inner conflict, flaws, and baggage. He might not start out brave or even super likeable, but the challenges he faces bring out courage, resources and inner strength and honor/values he didn’t know he had. more »

This week Thomas & Mercer, the mystery and thriller imprint of Amazon Publishing, is bringing out a re-edited version of my thriller A Fine and Dangerous Season. My heart is pounding against my ribcage with excitement. Does this mean more sales than ever? Does this mean I will become an author who can replace a day job’s earnings with royalties? Well, we’ll find out. But I figure at what may be a turning point, it’s also time to look back. How did I get here anyway? more »

The Author Hookup Trend

L.J. Sellers : August 3, 2013 4:33 pm : blog

by L.J. Sellers, author of provocative mysteries & thrillers

Janet Evanovich and Lee Goldberg, J.T. Ellison and Catherine Coulter, JA Konrath and each of his writer friends—everywhere you look, authors are teaming up.

The trend seems more prevalent than ever, and I suspect it’s because authors are operating more independently now and because they have to work so hard to reach new readers. Collaborating with another writer brings a whole new readership to each partner, at least for that story or series, and hopefully with spillover to other work more »

Kick Starting My Fifth Novel by Keith Raffel

Keith Raffel : June 26, 2013 2:02 pm : blog

I have published four books. My first two were done the traditional way – paper and ink. Neither showed up on the New York Times bestseller list, but I have no real complaints. Bookreporter.com called my first book “the mystery debut of the year” and the second made the top 10 on a national bestseller list for crime fiction and was optioned for film. Still for my third book it was time to move on. I wanted to reach more readers and my traditional publisher could not make that happen.

Now I’m a Silicon Valley guy by upbringing and inclination. more »

Setpiece scenes: the unlimited production budget

Alexandra Sokoloff : June 9, 2013 12:56 pm : blog

by Alexandra Sokoloff

I’m headed off to teach a Screenwriting Tricks workshop in Texas this week, and I’m going to be posting some prep work for my class, so you guys get the benefit of it, if you want to play along!

One of the things I always hope people get out of my workshops and writing workbooks is the concept of setpiece scenes. I try to hit that hard up front in a workshop, and keep going back to examples during the day.

There’s a saying in Hollywood that “If you have six great scenes, you have a movie.” And I’ve said before that these six great scenes are usually from that list I’ve given you of the Key Story Elements.   more »

Will Not Disappoint

L.J. Sellers : June 8, 2013 2:51 pm : blog

by L.J. Sellers, author of provocative mysteries & thrillers

What exactly does it mean when readers say in reviews, “You won’t be disappointed,” or something similar. I get that sometimes lately, and I see it in a lot of reviews for other authors.

I understand and appreciate that the phrase is meant to be positive. In fact, it could be part of a terrific review. But sometimes the line worries me, because it feels like a euphemism for “This book is okay. You won’t be disappointed, but you might not be impressed either.” The absence of a negative is not quite the same as a positive. more »

Why Literary Agents Attend Writers Conferences (It’s Not What You Think) by Karen Dionne

Karen Dionne : June 6, 2013 2:30 pm : blog

Every week literary agents receive hundreds of query letters from aspiring writers who are hoping to interest the agent in their project. Why then, would agents take time from their busy schedules to go to a writers conference and meet yet more writers in person?

I’ve worked with over a hundred literary agents during the 9 years I’ve been organizing the Backspace Writers Conferences in New York City, as well as the newly minted Salt Cay Writers Retreat taking place this October on a private island in the Bahamas (really!). So I asked a few of my favorite agents why they attend writers conferences. Their answers may surprise you. more »
